Living With An ANGEL For The First Year

June, what a beautiful month of memories, past and present! Our beautiful Esther turned ONE this month.

June 12th, 2011, 2:35pm...it was TIME! It was God's perfect time. Esther Ruth Gruntmeir was born on this beautiful HOT summer day. Jeff and I were smitten, in love, in awe, and so very unaware as to what God had in store for us. But we learned that by putting our trust in Him we would make  the "perfect" parents for this "perfect" gift. He knew what He was doing when He placed her into our care and blessed our home with life!

We celebrated Esther's 1st birthday at home surrounded by loved ones and friends. here are a few photos from her BIG day.

"It's fun to be ONE!"

The BIRTHDAY girl!

She's learning so quick and getting into mischief everywhere she goes... Esther has learned to walk and along with that comes a very independent little girl! Esther zooms around the house giggling as she goes, chasing the poor dogs in hopes of catching and giving them a great big hug.

Picking up new signs and beginning to really verbalize her opinions, Esther has added new signs and verbal vocabulary to her repertoire this month:

Esther's Signing vocabulary includes:

  1. Fish
  2. Ball
  3. More
  4. "All done"
  5. Baby
  6. Sleep
  7. Fan
  8. Milk
  9. Water
  10. Eat
  11. Dog
  12. Mommy
  13. Daddy
  14. Gental
  15. Please

  11. All Done

Esther is able to make the "kissy face/ fish face" and it's silly when mommy and daddy kiss one another and Esther is watching, she loves to make the kissy face and smack her lips. We just died laughing when she first started that!!! She can be quit the comedian.

Still following simple commands, Esther will retrieve items when asked and understand the meaning behind our requests. It's so exciting to see her blossom into a toddler. And interesting to experience the many learning opportunities we have had. This month we have incorporated "time outs" as Esther has become more independent and VERY "matter of fact!"

Jeff and I continue to focus on our relationship first as we realize that having a toddler/baby can easily  take over and leave little room for "us time." We try to date each other once a week and spend time in devotion each evening in order to focus on one another. I love that God has placed Jeff in my life and that we have the same beliefs and views...it sure makes family life and parenting so much more enjoyable.

Jeff still enjoys his work as he stays busy but not to busy for family. And I continue to work in the lab, shadow vet students and staff at the teaching hospital, study for my upcoming GRE exam, and work on my vet school application. This summer seems to be flying by rather quickly and Jeff helps to keeps me focused on my goals when I feel I am not. What a wonderful husband he is!!!

I can't wait to share next month's adventures of home, school and work with all of you. We enjoy sharing our life and love for one another in hopes that we set an example and keep you updated on what's new or as we like to call it... "Growing With The Gruntmeir's."

More in the Month of May

We can't believe it...Esther is almost one!
As we were eating breakfast together as a family the other morning, I looked at our little sunshine as she was eating her oatmeal and fresh fruits, and couldn't help but think of the wonderful year that has flown by so very quickly. I thanked God for the blessing of her birth and what an amazing experience it was and IS to be a mother to one of His very own. I thanked Him for her smiles that light up our home and lives, her sweet girly fragrance, her laughter, fingers, and toes...I went on and on and on. Nothing can replace the loving moments I've been given with my family and in eight, I repeat, EIGHT days we will be celebrating 12 beautiful months of LIFE with miss Esther Ruth Gruntmeir! (Whooo hooo*)

Next month we will share Esther's birthday celebration with you...

This past month (May) has been Tornado season for Oklahoma but we have managed to stay safe and out of harms way. We hope to be coming to an end to this season, but not so ready for the HEAT of the summer! So far we haven't gotten above the mid 90's so we have been enjoying the lush green grass and trees, being thankful for today. Jeff, Esther, and I have been spending a lot of time at the pool each weekend since it's been warming up and Esther has absolutely loved her time spent in the water.

She's always been very independent but starting on Mother's day, Esther took her first steps and has been working hard every day to perfect her "walking skills". As of today Esther is able to take 6-7 steps on her own without any help (Nor does this girl WANT any help..."she must take after her mother," Jeff says!)

Books are her passion and saying that Esther loves to read would be an understatement. Before bed, after waking up, when playing...there is never a bad time to read a book. If we ask her to bring us a book, Esther will hurry off to one of her many book bins and bring us her favorite books to read. she enjoys reading books to mommy and daddy as well as having us read them to her as she works on signing along.

Jeff and I carry our own CamelbaK water bottles around with us everywhere we go and drink lots of water each day. Of course Esther has felt the need to master drinking from our Camelbak bottle and has lost much interest in drinking from her boring sippy cups. Last month Jeff and I ordered Esther her very own baby CamelbaK water bottle and she loves it! It's so cute to see her drinking from it when she's thirsty. We tend to place it on a small table in the kitchen for her so when she is thirsty she is free to come and drink from it throughout the day.

So serious drinking from her water bottle at the pool
Esther has also been able to follow simple instructions this month such as, "Sit on your bottom, please" "Bring me a book,"  and "where is...?," along with a few other instruction/ commands. She seems to be very observant to the world around her in so many ways. She never ceases to impress mommy and daddy.

We have certainly enjoyed another month gone by and all that it has brought to our home. Here are some more photos of fun activities we enjoyed as a family during the month of May.

We won tickets to the Circus and got to see the Elephants and circus acts!

The month of May also brought with it our 5th wedding anniversary. I couldn't image my life without my best friend. Jeff is a strong leader, amazing father and loving husband. God has blessed us with a strong commitment to one another that is unified in and through Him, Jesus Christ. Not only being married to your best friend but ultimately the one God hand picked just for me brings joy and happiness to my heart each and every day. I am so excited to share eternity with my husband and grow together spiritually just as God has intended and promised!
We celebrated our 5th year together by spending our very first night away from home...and away from Esther. But Jeff did a fantastic job at surprising me and keeping my mind distracted enough to enjoy our time together (instead of being a worrisome mother).

Happy anniversary to my hubby

We enjoyed a couples massage at our hotel he reserved in downtown OKC and after, I was surprised with chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne brought to our room. Dinner at Flints followed by a stroll around Bricktown and the outdoor botanical gardens was just what I needed...quality time, connection and intimacy with my husband! Before heading home, of course, we had to stop by "Pinketzel" to find Esther a sweet little gift as a souvenir for when we returned home.

"And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."

News Flash...We're a busy bunch!!!

So the idea that I would be able to post around the first of each month is quickly fading into the distance. As a busy momma and student the blog may just have to update...it's self?! But seriously, I apologize for the late monthly update and even though the "first" of the month may not work I'll continue to update the blog as quick as possible each month.

To all our family far and wide and friends close to our hearts but far from our sides, we love you and miss you and are excited to share last months milestones and adventures!

So, last month marked the end of my spring semester at OSU. I finished with a 4.0 GPA with a lot of hard work and studying! The two classes I enjoyed the most this spring included Organic chemistry and animal nutrition.

After finals were complete I quickly started my new research position at the Vet school and am excited for the opportunity to learn, research and gain valuable experience throughout the next year. I am currently working on several specialized tests on antibodies, managing the lab and orders and maintaining our labs rat and mice colonies. Jeff and I have also been able to meet a wonderful friend who has been training me in the lab and is currently working on her Post Doc. and is far from home (Australia). We have been able to help her settle into her flat and make her feel more at home just a little more each day!

Other plans for my so called "summer break" include:
  1. Beginning an internship at the vet teaching hospital on the 4th of June, where I will be expected to follow cases, report and write papers over concepts learned in the clinic.
  2. Study for the GRE and then take the GRE by the end of July
  3. Plan Esther's 1st birthday...WOW...
  4. And APPLY FOR VET SCHOOL! (Applications open mid June and close in October)

Needless to say, my plate is quite full for the rest of the summer months.

Jeff continues to work at the vet school himself, under Dr. Little, and still very much enjoys his job there! He finds time to garden each day and is very proud of his fresh veggies he has collected for his family.
Of course I've known for some time now but I just want to say it out loud...to the world...I have such an UNSELFISH husband who is loving, devoted and supper supportive in everything that I do!!! I have accomplished so much because of his unselfishness and just adore how he encourages me each and every day to follow my dreams while he lends countless helping hands and cherishes being a father! So0o0o0oooooo...for that, thank you baby for your commitment to me (and Esther), because without you I couldn't have come this far! Jeff and I will be celebrating our 5th year of marriage this month and look forward to many more amazing years to grow in our marital walk with Christ and set an example for Esther.

"Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
~ Ephesians 5:1-2

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
~ Proverbs 22:6

On a "different note," it's time for us to introduce the newest addition to the "Gruntmeir pack"...After a 90 day probation period Jeff is finally (although much to his dismay) allowing me to announce MY exciting news..hahahaha

We welcome Buff (In the Buff) Gruntmeir! Long story short, Buff's previous owners were no longer able to care for him and thus gave him to the shelter. He was sent to OSU to be neutered and vaccinated and one of our friends quickly texted me a photo of our beautiful boy! You see, I have always wanted a Chinese crested and after a long wait, he is finally where he belongs...In our pack. He is such a sweet sweet boy!!! WELCOME Buff...

Ok, now on the GOOD stuff! Esther...

She has grown like a weed and just matures right before our eyes. She is going to start her transition from the nursery at the daycare into the toddler room throughout the month. As parents we are very nervous but also know that the teachers there are very good and work hard to make the transition easy for the little ones. Esther has dropped her "baby naps" and only naps once a day now, right after lunch time. We hope to be fully moved into "toddler land" by her first birthday.

Our first Easter  with Esther was last month and we enjoyed family time that Sunday at our home for lunch (all the little girls in the house had matching dresses this year). The month of April was busy and flew by but here are some photos of some of the fun and new adventures April held for us...

  1. Mommy
  2. Daddy
  3. Uh-Oh
  4. Blue
  5. Bu (Book)

My very first mother's day was supper special and perfect! Jeff, as always, helped me to relax, we ate a special mother's day dinner at my parent's house where dad took a few mother's day photos before we parted ways.

My life has changed so much since the birth of Esther Ruth and to feel the love of a mother first hand is definitely somethings wonderful! I can't imagine life without her in it and am so very blessed to be a MOTHER to one of God's perfect gifts!!!

Thank you Lord for entrusting this gift, that You alone created with your own hands, to Jeff and I...May You guide us and teach us to raise her in Your loving image. ~Amen
